At Wild Bhiza Stables, our passion extends far beyond horse riding in Victoria Falls. We are committed to improving animal welfare, supporting local communities and creating a lasting positive impact throughout rural Zimbabwe.
Working alongside CARE – Community Animals Research & Education and the dedicated Dr. Isaac Moyo, we recently hosted a Free Animal Vet Care Day for families living in the villages surrounding Victoria Falls. The event brought together animal owners, veterinary professionals and volunteers with one shared goal – improving the lives of both animals and the communities that depend on them.
Why Rural Animal Care Matters in Zimbabwe
In many rural communities around Victoria Falls, animals are much more than companions – they are essential to daily life and family livelihoods.
- Donkeys transport water, firewood and essential supplies.
- Cattle plough fields and support food production.
- Goats provide milk, meat and income.
- Dogs protect homes and livestock.
- Horses assist with transport, tourism and community activities.
Despite their importance, access to affordable veterinary care in rural Zimbabwe is often extremely limited. Many families cannot easily reach a veterinarian or afford routine treatments, leaving preventable illnesses untreated and reducing the wellbeing of both animals and the people who rely on them.
Education is equally important. Many owners have never been shown how to recognise the early signs of illness, prevent parasites or provide balanced nutrition. Through regular outreach programmes, we aim to bridge this gap with practical knowledge and compassionate support.
Community Veterinary Outreach: What We Offered
Our Free Animal Vet Care Day welcomed dozens of local families who travelled from surrounding villages, many walking long distances with their animals to receive treatment.
Under the guidance of Dr. Isaac Moyo and the CARE team, we provided:
- Comprehensive health checks for donkeys, cattle, goats, dogs and other livestock.
- Vaccinations to help prevent common diseases.
- Deworming and parasite control treatments.
- Wound assessment and treatment.
- Nutrition and feeding advice.
- Animal welfare education for children and adults.
- Practical demonstrations on recognising early signs of illness.
For many families, this was the first opportunity they had ever had to access professional veterinary care. The gratitude shown by the community reinforced how important these outreach clinics are for improving both animal welfare and rural livelihoods.
